Pilates is a method of body conditioning created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century and was originally called Contrology.
It is a series of exercises which involve working the body from the inside out. This often requires changing the way our bodies have become used to working due to lifestyle, occupation, injury and stress.
Pilates works on re-educating the order in which muscles are recruited which in turn corrects muscle imbalances, posture and alignment.
It is based on the principles of concentration, control, centering, breathing, flowing movements, precision and balance. It creates both a better awareness of the body and focus of the mind.
Pilates works on the re-educating and strengthening the deep core muscles which are the support for the spine and can often become inactive or 'switched off' due to muscle imbalance or injury.
In this way Pilates is extremely beneficial for lower back pain sufferers as a form of rehabilitation and injury prevention, as it is both a gentle form of exercise and can also be tailored the individuals needs.
